Looking a little closer, it appears that default view is "from today" so if someone posts at night and you come in the morning, you've already passed the window of availability.

Change Forum Display Options -> Default Thread View from Show threads from last day to Show threads from last 5 days (or some other setting to suit you).
There may also be a global admin change for all users (i.e., board default setting) but don't know this forum software. Either way, the setting I suggested DOES work.
